Another draw, but another encouraging performance from Racing. Holding Carli Lloyd and Midge Purce and their guile and pace at bay for 90 minutes is no mean feat. Erin Simon was injured early in the second half; hopefully she’s okay. She’s been a real force of nature on the right side for Racing while Emily Fox gets more involved with the offense.

Gotham had more of the ball, more shots, and more shots on target. CeCe Kizer wasn’t able to record a shot. Lauren Milliet led the team in offensive production with four attempts, but none were on target. Two shots on goal in an entire game isn’t great, and neither is the fact that all but two of Racing’s 11 shots were taken outside the 18 yard box. Then again, Gotham and their firepower and experience only had four shots on goal, so silver linings, etc.

So Racing’s inaugural Challenge Cup campaign is done. While everyone would’ve liked a win or more points, there are lots of positive things to take from the club’s first four matches: hard work, taking advantage of limited opportunities, and a fun style of play. There may be more losses than wins on the record when the season ends, but if these women can keep their positive attitudes and effort at similar levels this season, this club has a bright future ahead of it.
